The First Step Shelter Culminates a 10-Year Effort

by Michael E. Arth, 12-15-17

The First Step Shelter has finally been approved and ground broken at 3889 West International Speedway Blvd, across the boulevard from the Stewart Marchman Mental Health facility on Red John Drive just west of Daytona Beach.

This is the culmination of a decade-long effort to see a shelter for the homeless at that location. It is appropriately named “First Step” since it has the potential to grow into a holistic, transformational campus of services that would provide additional services in a cohesive community. Some of these additional services would include short-term housing, treatment beyond Stewart Marchman, jail diversion for drug and alcohol related offenders, job training, medical services, and a permanent home for those who, for whatever reason, are not able to integrate themselves into the urban fabric.
